Treaty of Waitangi Essay

In 1830 there were 100,000 Māori and 100 Europeans living in New Zealand. The behavior of the Whalers, the Missionaries’ desire to help protect Māori rights, and the Musket Wars were reasons that a treaty was needed. The Declaration of Independence was another contributing factor to the need for a treaty.

One reason that a treaty was needed was the lawless behavior of some of the British Settlers like whalers. This was important because the Maori were getting caught up in the fighting and drinking that was occurring which had a negative effect. When the British arrived and were off the ships the first thing they did was get drunk, which led to very poor behavior. The fighting got really out of hand and wasn’t necessary, the Maori were being affected by the British. Maori women were used as prostitutes which left them feeling hurt and unsafe. The behavior shown was enough to make a treaty that set peace and rules around their behavior and them as people.

The behavior shown was enough to make a treaty that set peace and rules around their behavior and them as people.

Another reason that a treaty was needed was because of the Musket Wars. In the 1800s the musket wars began, over 2000 people were killed during this time. The first tribe to get muskets was at the top of the North Island, Ngapuhi. The tribe did a lot of trading things for muskets so that there became a balance, the balance made them stronger than others. The musket trade had a big impact on land loss for the Maori, the tribal boundaries moved a lot which left not as much land for them. As a result of this many impacts occurred, firstly many harmless people were dying just for others to get what they wanted. People lost their homes and their land over a war that could have been contained in a different way.

The final reason that a treaty was needed was the existence of the Declaration of Independence. Was the Declaration of Independence the catalyst that led to the Treaty of Waitangi? Significantly, the Declaration of Independence was instigated by the British to give them better trading with the Maori. The Declaration started on 28 October 1835, the purpose was to show protection, mana, and sovereignty. 34 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, the treaty was thought to be signed by more people. Therefore the treaty brought positive trading methods.

In conclusion, a treaty was needed to source peace between everyone. Trading was a big problem with all the tribes, musket wars became a way of killing people to get land and other things. The Treaty of Waitangi stopped these unnecessary behaviors.

 Solar System Model

We are making a solar system model, with paper mache planets/ping pong balls

(Diagram)^

  • Cardboard box

  • Paper

  • Paint (Black, White, Orange, Yellow, Red, Blue)

  • String

  • Maybe Tape..

  • Paper mache

Plan:

  1. Paint the cardboard box black, and cover up all the holes. Flicker white paint over the back of the cardboard box to create the star effect.

  2. Start making the planets with paper mache, paint the planets to the colour shown above (In the diagram).

  3. Use the string and attach it to the planets, cut some holes in the top of the box, thread the string through it and hold the planets in place.

  4. Finish the touch ups1

Outcome:

Conclusion:
In the end, we ended up changing all the planets to ping pong balls as it was easier to fit them all into the black box which was the base of our solar system. Something I would do better next time is adding some more detail to setting, or maybe hang up the ufo's.

Kristallnacht

  1. What is meant by the term “Kristallnacht”?

  • Night of broken glass

  1. When did this event occur?

  •  9&10 of 1938

  1. How many synagogues did the program claim were burned?

  • 267 destroyed and burned

  1. How many Jews were claimed to have died as a result of this event?

  • 91 jews

  1. How many were said to have been sent to concentration camps?

  • 30,000

  1. What was the reaction of the German people to this event?

  • It was the jew’s fault.

The document that was written shows that Kristallnacht was planned as the letter was written on November 8, 1938. Another example of showing that it was planned was because it stated that the Germans were allowed to go around damaging the jew’s business. The Germans were allowed to smash or damage anything but were not allowed to take anything. Non-jew businesses were protected from this so nothing was damaged. As soon as possible, officials were arrested many males, especially the wealthy ones.

The Nazi Party - Nuremberg Laws

  1. Provide two examples of ways in which the Nuremberg laws affected the rights of German Jews.

  • They weren’t allowed to vote so that the Jews couldn’t have a say in who had the right to make the rules.

  • They weren’t allowed to have sexual interactions, Hitler was trying to split them up so that there was no interaction and friendships between the Jews and Germans.

  1. What other actions were taken that discriminated against Jews in Germany? (Remembering)

  • The Nuremberg Laws did not identify a ‘jew’ as someone with particular religious beliefs.

  1. Why do you think that the Nazis passed these laws? (Understanding)

  • The Nazi passed the laws to take away power from the Jews so they Hitler would have an easier path to dictator so he could complete his goal of world power.

  1. If a New Zealand government passed a law that provided for different treatment of a named racial group in New Zealand, what do you think the reaction of most New Zealand people would be? Why do you think this might be the case? (Applying)

  • I think that the people of New Zealand would not approve of racist laws because we have many different races and cultures. We also are one of a few countries that are accepting of all races.

  1. Do you think these Nuremberg laws were racist? Explain your point of view. (Evaluating)

  • I think that these laws were racist because they took away people's rights simply because of their color of skin and where they came from. They also took away many of the Jew rights and these laws also affected people who had some Jewish assent even if they did not identify as part of the Jewish race or religion.

Traditional Foods Unit

 Maori Kai

Growing and gathering traditional foods was a big change for the Maori Culture. The Maori ancestors brought many edible plants from their homeland such as kumara, yam, and taro, these crops then had to adapt to the new environment.  In New Zealand, the climate was much colder than their home.

Maori had a very traditional way of cooking food for their families, which was called a Hangi (Earth oven), this method was very useful for cooking meals for large families or big gatherings. Maori did not make pottery, so for them to boil water was to place a red hot stone in a wooden bowl of liquid. Nowadays, people use ovens, stovetops, microwaves, and other cooking sources to cook food. Hangi's are still used but not as often as they did, but mostly used for special occasions.

Social Studies - Human Rights

 Human rights - Hitler View

Hilter said “the jets were responsible for bringing negroes in the Rhineland” this shows that Hilter was against anti-semitism because he showed that he didn’t like the Jews, he didn’t count them as the white race, and they lower the cultural-political level.

“The Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end... spying on unsuspicious German girls he plans seduce” Hitler wanted to take the Jewish out because of what they did to the German girls, He wanted to keep the German a pure race.

Extracting DNA - Science

 Aim: To extract DNA.

Method:

1. mush half a kiwi fruit into a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt.

2. Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.

3. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and stir together.

4. Pour the liquid into a testtube.

5. Place the test tube into a beaker filled with warm water.

6. Leave for 10 minutes.

7. slowly pour 5ml of methylated spirits down the inside of the test tube.

Results:

Discussion:

You find DNA inside an organism, inside that organism in a cell, every cell has a nucleus which is the control centre of the cell. Each nucleus is made up of 46 chromosomes and those chromosomes represent your DNA.

Did you know we share 60% of our DNA with a banana. And we share 96% of DNA with a gorilla although we are more chimpanzees than we are gorillas.

Conclusion: This experiment worked really well.

Social Studies - The Holocaust

Germany

In social science we are overlooking the Holocaust we are starting by looking at the big depression.

During the global depression, Germany was hit the hardest. The worldwide depression affected many countries, leaving people without a home, with no money, unemployed, and being affected by World War II. An obvious consequence that occurred was a huge rise in unemployment. Numbers went from 1.4 million unemployed to 2 million people.  By the time Hitler became the leader, 1 and 3 people were unemployed. Americans endured the biggest crisis in the nation’s history, at its worst over a quarter of the workforce was unemployed. Housing prices went up to a percentage of 67, making it very hard for families to have a home.  This shows that the global depression had a big effect on everybody no matter their situation.

Germany was demanded to sign the Treaty of Versailles, to ensure peace between countries but to take the power away. This treaty was made at the end of World War 1,  the treaty was produced by Paris peace, and was signed in 1919. By signing this treaty, at the start, the treaty caused anger, hate, and revulsion of the society.  Germany lost many rights as a country or an individual. Germany was made to pay reparations of 70 Billion dollars in today’s money. This took them a very long time to pay off and finished paying this is off on 3rd October 2010.

The great depression reached right around the world starting in the United States. The reason it reached over here in New Zealand was that overseas countries brought New Zealand’s goods, after that, they did no longer buy the goods which meant there was no income coming into the country. New Zealand is an agricultural country. Unemployment in New Zealand rose to 12%, and those who were lucky enough to keep their jobs lost 20% of their income.

Wind Racers

Aim: To make the fastest wind racer.

Method:

1. Glue popsicle sticks together, into a big triangle.

2. Plastic bag over the popsicle sticks.

3. Add string to the end and pull it over to the edge of the platform

4. Add the bag over the edges.

5. Blow with a leaf blower.

Results:

Before we started this activity we learned the 4 forces (Thrust, gravity, weight, drag).

We used our knowledge and what we weren't over the topic to create a sail for the wind racers and see who for the furthest. We placed 4th.

Star Fish Poem - Social Studies

The main message of this poem is a mand trying to make difference to the starfish by chucking them back into the ocean. And another man says that what he is doing is useless.

"I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" "The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along with it. You can't possibly make a difference!"

News Paper Article - Social Studies

 Newspaper Article

The main problem in the Eastern Pacific Ocean is that there is a great pacific garbage patch in the ocean. A garbage patch is a gyre that is circulating around in a certain place of the ocean, causing a garbage patch underneath the water, which can not be seen. This is caused by the rubbish that has ended up in the ocean. The movement of the water is causing the rubbish to get stuck in this gyre and it’s getting bigger by the second. Tones and tones of marine life die every day because of this environmental catastrophe. 100 million marine animals die from plastic waste alone, ⅓ of the marine life is found tangled in the litter.  Fisherman's abandoned fishing gear makes up a big population of rubbish in the ocean estimated at around 8-12 tons in the ocean each year. Meaning the cause of this is death. This shows that because of one mistake it’s turned into a bigger situation.

Beatles - Tour New Zealand

Social Studies

Why people didn't want the Beatles to tour NZ:

Some people didn't want the Beatles to tour New Zealand, as they thought some people may not be able to handle them. They assumed that they would be out of control. A lot of people were against the Beatles, because of the way they acted, people took it as that was the way people were going to act when they left.

Why people did want the Beatles to tour NZ:

Many people wanted the Beatles to tour New Zealand because they wanted to escape the world and have some fun! People wanted the tour to happen so that they could express themselves. Most people just liked their songs.

Making Salts II - Experiment

 Science

Aim: To produce copper sulfate by reacting copper oxide with an acid.

Method:

 - Add 20ml of sulfuric acid to a 100ml beaker. HEat the acid until it reaches 70'C. Turn off bunsen burner.

 - Once heated, use a spatula to add pea-sized portions of copper oxide to the beaker. Stir the mixture for 30 seconds.

 - Repeat step 2 until no more will dissolve. Allow the beaker to cool.

 - Fold the filter paper and place it in the funnel. Place the filter funnel into the second beaker.

 - Make sure the beaker is cool enough to hold at the top. The contents should still be hot. You may need your teacher to help you complete this step.

 - Gently swirl the contents of the beaker to mix, and then pour the filter paper un the funnel. Allow filtering through.

 - Place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker and carefully pour some of the solutions from the beaker into the evaporating basin.

 - Gently heat the beaker until the solution in the evaporating basin was reduced in half.

 - Leave the evaporating basin to cool. Once cool, move the evaporating basin to a warm place where it will not be disturbed (o.e. a window-sill)  and observe over the next few days. Blue copper sulfate crystals should form.

Results:  (Below)

Discussion: Copper oxide + sulfuric acid -> water + copper sulfate. This means the oxide and the acid came together to make the water. The copper and sulfuric combined to make the copper sulfate which is the scientific name of the blue crystals.

Conclusion: Our aim was to produce copper sulfate by reacting copper oxide with an acid, for us this was a success. Something I would try to do differently next time is, try and change the color of the crystals.

English - SEXXXY Paragraph

The film aspects show meaning in John G Avildsen's film "The Power of One"

S: In the concert scene, we hear the native South Africans sing aloud a song in their language that was written by P.K, the main character.

E: The joyful song was lead by a native singer and the rest of the South African tribes sung harmoniously, whilst Doc played the piano and P.K. composed.

X: The song made the audience feel hopeful and it was moving. This was because P.K. - thought the signing - brought the tribes together.

X: The purpose of this help show that P.K. was the mythical figure of the Rain-Maker.

X: The singing with the long shots also shows the harmony of the natives as they are all sitting nicely together.

Y: The singing can be compound to the singing at the boxing match as the now freed natives sing to P.K. to show him they think he is the Rain-Maker. Both lots of singing give a sense of hope for the native South Africans.

Spiritual

 Spiritual - Music Through Time

Music was a way for slaves to express their feelings whether it was sorrow, joy, inspiration, or hope. Songs were passed down from generation to generation throughout slavery.

Harriet Tubman was a slave that escaped. She used this passage called the "underground railroad"

Wade in the water was a song that let the slaves know how to escape without being caught, but going into the water.

Kayne West is a rapper, and a lot of the time there is a passage in the song. The passage was a message, the message was about slavery. In his song "New Slaves" he put in this message:
They tryna make new slaves
See that's that privately-owned prison
Get your piece today
They prolly all in the Hamptons
Braggin' 'bout what they made
