Ngāi Tahu unveil Te Ātanga, the Broadhurst-Shelford Trophy

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles are going to be versing the Vodafone Warriors at the AMI Stadium on the 9th of June. You are probably wondering why I am telling you this? Well, you know ex-Hornby High School Student Adrian Shelford, that was the team he played for.

Adrian Shelford died in 2003. Hami Shelford said his family was honoured by the recognition his brother Adrian received through the trophy. He said that he remembered Adrian who passed away in 2003, as a man with the determination and the commitment to succeed in everything he did.

He was a man of strength in many different ways physically, morally and spiritually. He was 100% committed to everything he inspired to be, on the field or off.

The trophy was there to represent Ngai Tahu Culture. The trophy has a particular significance for Adrian who whakapapa to Ngai Tahu. The trophy recognizes two former Christchurch greats, Mark
Broadhurst and Adrian Shelford, who represented Manly in the 1980s and 1990s. They started their career at the Christchurch Rugby League Club. Manly has committed to have a home game in Christchurch for 2018 and 2019 with an opposition for a third match 2020, and the trophy is always on the line everytime Manly takes the field in Christchurch.
