Decomposition

Aim: To learn about the rate that different materials decompose

Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that the banana is going to decompose the fastest. 

Materials: 

1. Bananas (piece)
2. White Styrofoam (piece)
3. Paper (piece)
4. Bread (piece)
5. x4 Test tubes
6. Test tube rack 

Steps: 

1. Firstly you need to have your experiment ingredients ready (Bananas into strips, white styrophone into strips, paper into strips and bread into strips.) 
2. Secondly grab your 4 test tubes and test tube rack, and put a piece of each thing into the 4 test tubes. 
3. Depending on how large the top of your test tubes are, will depend on if you need a bung or not.  

TODAY	Colour	Change	Observations
Banana	Yellow & brown	-	It was a multi colour between brown and yellow.
Paper	White	-	Ended up being cardboard, it was in small pieces.
Styrophone cup	White	-	The styrophone cup was white, it was also in small pieces.
Bread	Brown and white	-	The bread was normal, It was cut into a strip

3 weeks	Colour	Change	Observations
Banana	Yellow/ Green/Brown /Black	The banana has gone from being a banana to a rotten piece of banana	- The banana isn't normal. - It's all mouldy.
Paper	Brown	-	- Hasn't changed since last time.
Styrophone cup	White	-	- Hasn't changed since last time.
Bread	Yellow/white/Brown /Black/orange	Has turned into a very disgusting thing to look at, smells really bad.	- Colour change - Smells

5 weeks	Colour	Change	Observations
Banana	Orange, Brown, White, green	It's started to become really disgusting, still smells gross, it's starting to loose it's water.	- Smells - Colour change
Paper	Brown	Nothing	- Normal - No smell - No colour change
Styrophone cup	White	Nothing	- Normal - No smell - No colour change
Bread	Pink, White, black,	Has no water left in the tube, It's started to go pink, has different colours.	- Smells - Colour change
